Self-Portrait

Petra Ruzickova was born and lives in Prague. She has been presenting her photographic work regularly since the beginning of the 1990s (France, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Brazil). Since 2000, she has exhibited primarily in the USA, especially in the galleries of New York. In 2003, she published Fortress (Pevnost), a monograph on the military fortress at Terezin, which was used as a concentration camp and Jewish ghetto in the Second World War. She has won a number of prizes for her work, including the European Prize for Photography. Petra Ruzickova?s artwork is featured in many private and public collections, including those of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art and the National Museum of Photography in Jindrichuv Hradec. She has also worked on thematic sets of photographs in exotic lands such as India, Africa, and Martinique. She is fascinated by southern climes and the path that leads to the sun, to the gods, the sphinxes, mysteries, and to temples. For Petra Ruzickova, a photograph is not just a piece of art; it is also a sacred subject, an icon, an image heaving with spiritual energy.
