Despite the fact that Nazaré is known in the world for its gigantic waves, with the surf competition "Nazare Tow Challenge” made famous by Garrett McNamara, one of the oldest traditions of the country rests on the nearby beach: sun-drying fish. 
While the men had the job of going to the sea to fish, it was the women, on land, who had the function of selling the fish. 
89 years old Manuela has been drying and selling fish since she was 7. This ancestral tradition is a feminine skill that has been passed down from mothers to daughters over the years and is still alive today. 


Martin Miklas is Lisbon-based conceptual, documentary and fine art lens-based visual artist from Bratislava.
The Slovak photographer is passionately interested in important topics such as climate change and its side effects on marine biodiversity. His lenses focus on the negative impact of global warming on the fishing industry, especially from a socio-economic and ecological point of view.
Martin is alumn of the 2022-23 VII Photo Masterclass and proud father of two (full-time dad at the paternity leave).
