Two Luminous Nights

I run into it unexpectedly in two luminous nights in the Sicilian port city of Catania. The more more stunning because this happened in Europe, a continent generally defined secular and well off. I run into a night of ferocious devotion. And, then, I run into the hard life experience of a fish-less night as I went out with local fishermen on their boat. As we returned to port with an empty boat, the bitter taste of nicotine, coffee, failure and fear for the future was palpable. Those man were empty-handed but not empty-hearted in a city where devotion and hard living are inextricably bound.
