The seaweeds are collected by women at sunrise, when the tide recedes, and are used to produce food, pharmaceutical and beauty products, bioplastics and biofuels. Their cultivation has significantly improved the life of many Zanzibari women who can now afford school fees and medical expenses, luxuries like radios and bicycles, and some of them have become entrepreneurs to all effects. Aquaculture projects are now announced to teach the cultivation, selection and stocking of the seeds, and to teach the commercial and financial operations for people to become self-employed entrepreneurs.
