Hell Drill

Hell Drill

This series documents a mass-casualty exercise where a simulated active shooting took place during a staged pep rally by the bleachers at Greenport High School on Long Island, NY. In a gruesome new American ritual, 'mass casualty' simulations are training first responders about the agonizing choices they would face during a real shooting spree. I pitched this story to my editor, Kathy Ryan at The New York Times Magazine.

I am interested in telling stories about the communities that surround me, especially those that are overlooked and marginalized. By documenting relevant moments in history, I am contributing to a discourse about the crucial role that support plays in the lives of all people, paving a road with wide-ranging expressions. I see my work as a meditation on the changing landscape of our communities and the people I encounter and how through photography, I can illustrate the value and humanity of my subjects and how imperative empathy and our interconnectedness is to our survival.
