The Chassahowitzka is a very fragile, spring-fed estuary on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Saltwater began creeping up into its freshwater creeks in 2010. Rising sea levels due to climate change are the primary cause. What was once verdant, semi-tropical forest is now an open plain of grasses relieved by salt-tolerant palms and dying hardwood trees. In 2014, I began photographing the ruined savannas and spring creeks there as a way of reckoning with the environmental devastation. The inundation of this estuary serves as an indicator of things to come for low-lying coasts around the world.
