The Protectors

As Covid 19 sweeps through the UK and Brexit cripples the economy, the UK government is still set to spend over £100 billion on the hugely unpopular HS2 project. It is the most expensive, wasteful and destructive project in UK history, set to destroy 108 ancient woodlands, 693 wildlife sites, 33 SSSI's, 5 Internationally important wildlife sites protected by UK law, 2000 homes and businesses and 19,500 permanent, proper jobs.

This series reveals the environmental impact of the project and tells the story of the tree protectors and activists who are dedicated to halting it.

Denise Laura Baker is a documentary, street and portrait photographer. Her work draws on influences from her eclectic career, notably her time as an ethnographic psychologist where she conducted interviews, observations and collected stories. Denise continues to collect and tell visual stories though her photography, matching them with recorded or written narrative.

Much of Denise's work is driven by her passionate commitment to contemporary environmental and political issues, but also seeking out hidden truths, underlying secrets, or capturing the mundane reality of everyday life.
