A review of Tony Monaco's latest dye image transfers will reveal a great deal about the vaguely macabre artist.
From abandoned buildings to forgotten cemeteries and city landscapes in small towns across America, each scene conveys a sense of peace and solitude commingling with the industrialized world. While at the same time, Tony's bold use of color, dynamic range and strong compositional elements convey the intense beauty and destruction the artist sees in the world around him. His photography invites the viewer on a journey to explore a world that co-exists with the hustle of everyday life.
Tony began working for a New York City based fashion photographer assisting on photo shoots and printing images for some of the most prestigious photographic magazines worldwide. In the early 1990's, Tony decided to open his first photography studio in New York. The studio did so well that he decided to open a second studio.
During this period, Tony had several experiences that would move him toward a full-time career as a photographer. In an effort to broaden his artistic talents and business base, Tony began teaching advance photography at a local Art Lab where he taught for over eleven years. "This was one of my life's most rewarding experiences", Tony recalls. During the early nineties, even though Tony still owned and operated his photography studios, he devoted more time to his personal photographic artist views.
By the late 1990's, Tony retired both his businesses. He continued teaching and exploring photography for personal expression. He spent several years developing and fine tuning his style, drawing upon new techniques to better capture his visions.
Today, Tony's travels lead him to a wide range of subject matter. However, all of Tony's work invites the viewer to join him on life's great adventure.
