India has vast reserves of coal in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and
other parts of the country and with increasing demand India wants to
double the production by 2020. There are both open as well as
underground pits but due to its high demand coal is now extracted
mainly from the open coal mines.This has resulted in pollution as these
mines emit intoxicating fumes, smoke and dust. Although the coal
excavation works are done mechanically, the labourers of these mines
are from the poorer sections of the society. They are continuously
exposed to toxic fumes,dust and fatal accidents.
Debasish was born in Jamshedpur, India.
He has been working on various photographic projects covering Environment, Long-Term Projects, Culture, Travel etc., since 2007..
His much-noted work on Bellandur lake pollution at Bangalore received international exposure on the worldwide press and this was published worldwide, notably by BBC, the Guardian and many others.
His works published by Lens Magazine, National Geographic books and National Geographic Travel Magazine (India).
Awards He was awarded internationally for many of his projects, including the
IPA- International Photography Awards -2016 - First Place in People Culture Category
Px3- Paris 2017 - Silver prize in Book / Documentary Category.
