Devotion

  • Prize
    Gold in Press/Travel/Tourism
  • Photographer
    Christopher Roche, United Kingdom

Devotion is a photographic journey that explores different faith traditions across the world.

From the Buddhist monasteries of Tibet to the rock hewn churches of Ethiopia; from the Sufi shrines of Iran to the burning Ghats of India and the animists in the Peruvian Andes the project will capture both the intimate and epic nature of these different belief systems.

It is the photographer’s experience that many of the ancient devotional traditions that have been central to the culture of these regions for hundreds if not thousands of years are now under threat from the forces of globalization, mass tourism and political
oppression. This photographic project hopes be a testament to the importance of these
traditions.

This project hopes to capture the common humanity rather than the dogma behind these traditions.

Born in Canada to Irish parents, Chris Roche grew up in Africa and around Europe. Dividing his time between working as a filmmaker and photographer he is now based in the UK.

His has won several awards including the Miramax Scriptwriting Award, the Wanderlust Photograph of the Year competition 2015, the Wild Frontiers Photo of the Year 2014 and the Sony World Photo of the Year 2016, National Award Ireland.
