Under Pressure

I photograph primarily in black and white using my Nikon
D5100 with an emphasis on abstract and often textural
compositions while observing my environment as it is. I prefer
to photograph something or a scene as found. I never alter the
arrangement of objects in my compositions. I don't use any
post production tools. All images are composed in camera;
Digital photography from the foundation of 35mm film
approach using manual features on my camera. This
photograph was taken during my travels in Berlin. A large stack
of old books outside of a used bookstore. All of them weathered
by the outdoor elements and compressed by the weight of an
(unseen) heavy, old, manual typewriter along with a large piece
of rusted iron hanging down the side. The stories, the pressure
of so many stories and rust reminds of the passing time. What
will we learn?

Composing photographs through borrowing from and engaging with the environment around me has been a significant practice throughout the majority of my life. Having very little professional training in photography, I trust my instincts and the emotional quality of the moment paired with my history and current state of mind. I am drawn to contrasts in shape and shadow, light and dark, a variety of extremes, and intense visual stimulation. All that cannot be described in words. My images are my expression of truth.
