The Umbrella Movement was a pro-democracy political movement that
took place in Hong Kong in 2014. Protesters are angry at changes to
Hong Kong's political system which will allow direct elections but only
from a pool of candidates approved by Beijing. They have been
camped out on major thoroughfares since Sept. 28 for more than 2
months, demanding greater democracy on the election of the Chief
Executive, which means candidates for the chief executive will be
nominated by Hongkongers, not an elite committee, and then voted
on by Hong Kong citizens. During the movement, there was a number
of clashes between police and the protesters. Protesters carrying
umbrellas - which have become symbols of the movement - battled
police armed with pepper spray, batons and riot shields.
