Petra-Olum

In 1964, Texaco arrived to Ecuador with a 1.5 million hectares concession in the Amazon rainforest, extracting oil from 450.000 hectares in its concession.
The oil giant admitted in court to having dumped billions of gallons of crude and dangerous chemical products directly into rivers and unlined pits over decades, in an especially diverse part of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest. This was constituted one of the largest oil disasters the world has ever seen. Hundreds of waste pits still sit, leaching toxic waters. The region now has the highest rate of cancer.
