This was the fifth failed rainy season, making it the worst drought in the past forty years for Kenya's wildlife and people. The scarcity of water brought about severe behavioral changes and escalating competition cross species for the limited resource. Bull elephants will travel long distances to specific, reliable water sources, of which this is one, and are known to fiercely defend them. This particular small bachelor group was no exception as they spent the entirety of the day slopping about the cache keeping the water to themselves.
