Ashura is a major commemoration for Shiites, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in Karbala in 680. Through prayers, processions, and mourning rituals, the faithful express their devotion through songs, gatherings, and sometimes acts of self-flagellation or self-inflicted wounds (Darhib and Tatbir). Often reduced to its most spectacular final processions, the Ashura commemoration also represents today a time for sharing and affirmation. Inspired by the work of Koudelka, Benbiksen, and Abbas, my photography seeks to highlight stories that connect spirituality, religion, and social issues. My work also focuses on current events and local figures in my region, particularly through public and private institutional commissions as well as collaborations with the press.
