Beyond Human Sight explores celestial structures that remain invisible to unaided vision. Using long-exposure, multi-band astronomical imaging, the series reveals supernova remnants, planetary nebulae, stellar nurseries, dust clouds, and distant fields hidden by darkness, distance, and scale. Rather than treating these images as neutral records, the project transforms measured light into a visual language of energy, duration, and cosmic form, extending human sight into regions that can only be experienced through instruments.

Alpha Zhang is a Shanghai-based deep-sky astrophotography artist and discoverer of two candidate celestial objects. Since 2014, he has used remote observatories, long exposures and multi-band imaging to transform faint astronomical signals into visual works. His practice connects scientific observation, technology and contemporary art. His work has been recognized by NASA APOD, Nature Astronomy, Royal Museums Greenwich’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year and DarkSky International. He is a columnist for China National Astronomy and a member of AstroBin’s IOTD staff.

• 2025 — Highly Commended, Astronomy Photographer of the Year 17, Royal Observatory Greenwich, for “Electric Threads of the Lightning Spaghetti Nebula”.
• 2025 — Four works shortlisted for Astronomy Photographer of the Year 17; “Electric Threads” and “M27: The Expanding Wings of a Dying Star” were selected for exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, London.
• 2022 — Two works shortlisted and exhibited in Astronomy Photographer of the Year: “NGC 2244: Rosette Nebula Core” and “NGC 2170: Angel Nebula”.
• 2024 — Image featured by NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day: “NGC 6727: The Rampaging Baboon Nebula”.
• 2025 — Cover image featured by Nature Astronomy, Volume 9, Issue 12, featuring Abell 1656.
