The series, Polar Plains, documents the landscapes of Svalbard, where ice, rock, and atmosphere meet at the edge of human presence. Photographed in 2025 by Nicholas Duers, the series observes a terrain shaped by wind, snow accumulation, and seasonal light rather than narrative or scale. These images approach the Arctic as a living system—seemingly austere, yet highly responsive—where subtle shifts in temperature and weather register visibly across landforms. The work invites sustained looking at a region whose remoteness belies its growing significance within a changing climate.

Nicholas Duers currently operates out of his photography studio located in Midtown, NYC. A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, he specializes in still-life photography of luxury goods, fashion accessories, and beauty products.
