Near my home there is a nature reserve filled with ancient oak trees. It was once a wooded pasture where the old oaks stood as solitary giants. Over time, a young forest grew around them and now blocks the sunlight they need to survive. Saving them would require only removing some of the younger trees, but logging is forbidden in the reserve. And so a paradox was created – the protection meant to preserve these ancient oaks is slowly killing them.
