“You have seen Delhi, but Delhi is not India. Go to the villages: that is where the soul of India lives.”
This statement by Gandhi inspired, fifty years ago, a landmark photographic book. In 1980, Gianni Berengo Gardin travelled through Madhya Pradesh to document a rural country shaped by ancient traditions and daily customs: the India of the villages. Nearly half a century later, photographer Lorenzo Zelaschi returns to the same places with a new book by Contrasto, observing a land suspended between enduring cultural roots and recent economic transformation.
