The Kayak and the Dogsled

The Inughuit, migrated about a thousand years ago to the part of northwest Greenland they now call home. This land in the High Arctic, although rich in wildlife, is delicate, and hunters learned over time how to balance their needs with the needs of the seals and whales.

To maintain narwhal and seals populations, Inughuit do not hunt them with rifles or motorboats. Instead, hunters venture out in kayaks and dogsleds and use wooden harpoons.

Mads Ole Kristiansen says, “Hunters are seeking balance, that is why we take care of our place. We are the balance, that is why we are hunters.”
