Glam Rock

I captured this otherworldly scene during a project to photograph the geology of Mangystau, Kazakhstan. The area was once covered by an ancient sea, the Tethys Ocean. As the sea receded, vast areas of chalky deposits were gradually exposed. The soft rock was then eroded by the extreme climate, sculpting an incredible, surreal landscape. This image is of Mount Bokty, a huge, looming structure that stands out on the Ustyurt plateau. The flamboyant colours of the rock are created by minerals in the layers of deposit. I used a drone camera and merged 12 individual shots to produce this image.
