Until a few decades ago, fishing with "seraje" in Burano supported numerous families. The fishermen of Burano lowered their nets in the northern lagoon and filled their boats with fish every morning. Over the years, due to pollution and climate change, the catch has decreased and the number of fishermen has diminished. That leaves the "moecanti" who fish for "moeche", molting crabs. The moeche are caught in the lagoon with "seraje", zigzag nets, and are placed in baskets called "vieri" to mature and then sold in the market.
