The Portrait Collages

These collages are created from 3 centuries of photography and reference portraiture from the Middle Ages and from early American folk art. The cryptic stories within these images are unriddled by symbolism giving insight into themes of nature, race, sexuality, religion, and death.

My interests lie in the flawed processes and alluring characters found in the daguerreotypes, tintypes and carte de visites of early photography. The poses, expressions, attire, landscapes and architecture are among the elements I use to construct these stories. I combine these with pieces from my own photography.

David Knox has traveled throughout the American South documenting the region for 30 years. His current work combines his photography with historic imagery to create photo collages in the realm of historical fiction.
Knox completed his MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2005 and his work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout the South. In 2019 he was awarded Fine Art Photographer of the Year by the International Photography Awards. He has taught photography since 1996 and is represented by Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans.
