Behind Glass

Since 2010 I have been traveling throughout Europe photographing primates in small zoos. I make portraits that reveal the unique personalities and expressions of the monkeys and apes that I visit. My goal is not to comment on the conditions of the zoos but to make photographs that inspire empathy. I hope people will respond with compassion for these primates, and that they will consider the welfare of all primates, living in desecrated and threatened habitats, in sanctuaries, or in zoos, and be moved to action. There is always something we can do to make things better.
