The book is inspired by my experience of living as a housewife in a gated expatriate residence in Russia. The social structure of the community was patriarchal.
Men were breadwinners and women, who quit their jobs in their own countries to support their husbands’ careers, became housewives. In many respects, this culturally diverse community, where whiteness was the norm and where women were defined in narrow roles as housewives and mothers, is a reflection of the power structures in capitalist society. As a housewife, I felt isolated, disempowered and socially invisible.
