New York City: The Year After

Almost 20 years ago, using the language of Street Photography and a little point and shoot camera as his weapon, the Peruvian photographer Santiago Bustamante, who was then a student of the MFA in Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts, used cheap drugstore film in order to document the emotional and social consequences of 9/11 in the citizens of NYC during the year after the attacks.

Bustamante analyzed the situation from a very personal and critical point of view. This project describes the complex atmosphere that existed in New York City during thr year after.

Santiago Bustamante was born in Madison, Wisconsin (U.S.A) in 1974. Son of Peruvian parents, he has a double citizenship. He is a photographer who lived most of his life in Lima and who moved to New York City in the year 2000. He was living in Astoria (Queens), when the 9/11 attacks happened. He was pursuing a Master`s Degree in Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts of NYC. Shortly after the attacks he worked as a photographer and volunteer in the Here is New York project.

He is currently a Photography Professor at The University of Lima, Peru.
