MAYA RUINS REVISITED
My photography book documents vestiges of once mighty, but now forgotten Maya kingdoms in Mexico and Guatemala, discovered and photographed by the 19th century explorer/photographer Teobert Maler. Today, many of these sites lie largely hidden and remain seldom visited. Walking in Maler's footsteps through overgrown jungle terrain and photographing "Maler" sites became my passion. My book depicts many of these sites, and over a century later, provides invaluable documentation of places rapidly being overcome by forces of nature and man, and hopefully serves as a marker for future generations.
I have been photographing indigenous peoples' culture for over forty years, living in Indonesia, Poland, Kazakhstan, Mexico, and Afghanistan. My work is represented in numerous public and private collections, and academic institutions throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, including the Asia Pacific Museum in Warsaw, San Francisco Arts Commission, Dumbarton Oaks, Spanish Colonial Museum in Santa Fe and special collections at Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Duke, Notre Dame and the University of New Mexico. My 5 award-winning photo books were published in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025.
