In my series “We The People…” I offer a portrait of American democracy through the lens of
President Trump’s words and actions and ask whether our country is being steered toward a
kleptocracy in which “we the people” don’t matter. I ask if those engaged in governing are
collectively seeding an achilles heel, i.e. the constant bleeding of doubt, anxiety, fear and anger
from the elected and the electorate.
I intend to parody President Trump’s childlike thinking and suggest it is akin to “zero sum theory”
which yields only imagined “winners” offset by an equivalence of “losers”. In a democracy one “wins”
if everyone benefits.
I juxtapose the President’s words with an image evincing suspicion of his veracity. Slight blurring
and skewing the image and words suggest Trump's bewildering thought process and characterize
him as incapable of, and uninterested in, behavior clearly benefitting anyone, or anything, but
himself.
I am Stephen Spiller, and I live in New York, NY, U.S.A. Since 2004, my work has been exhibited in galleries in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires and numerous other metropolitan locations, and in a variety of non-traditional, and traditional, venues, including Art Basel, Miami Beach.
