Lamentation over the Dead Christ

In rural communities of southern Italy the rituals are handed
down for centuries and they are the cultural identity of the
people. One of the most ancients is "Lamentation over the Dead
Christ" celebrated at Monte Sant'Angelo on Good Friday.
The procession begins at sunset, when a statue of the Dead
Christ is accompanied for the streets of old town. It is followed
by different groups of characters: women dressed in black, local
politicians, Passion's statues and symbols. During this ideal "way
of the cross" people leave home to offer one's condolences to
dead Christ.
Nowadays many traditions are threatened by social and
economic changes. The festivals are losing their authenticity
risking to disappear forever. So I wanted to tell the story of this
place and its people: a mythology of christians and pagan
images in which the origin are lost in the mists of antiquity.
