Conducted in Ouagadougou during a solo exhibition at the
French Institute, the series depicts ironically the exotic "water
carrier" cliché. I used twelve canaries, these clay jars usually
designed for transporting and storing the food, that I covered
with icons of consumption and communication. Then I asked
women in traditional dress to carry them in rural environments.
I wanted the incongruity to result both from the theme and the
place. It stems primarily from the fact that these canaries,
usually left rough, have their functional form tilted in an
iconography from another world. It also reflects the fact that
this intervention, inspired by the street art universe and its
urban diversions, is staged in a completely rural setting.
