Girl From Ipanema

GIRLS FROM IPANEMA

I am a Carioca – a person born in Rio, Brazil - who loves the beach and my city. At my
favorite part of the beach _ a spot in Ipanema by the tallest coconut tree _ at the end of
the day, when light is soft and the Two Brothers Mountains stand out in the horizon like
kings, a most beautiful show happens at the edge of the water. It starts at 5pm because
the law says so. Beautiful youngsters play Altinha. Altinha means highball. You can only
use soccer moves but it has not a goal. Nobody wins, nobody looses. Everybody has fun and
the better you play, the more fun it gets. The women that play it, along with the guys,
are amazingly beautiful and talented. They try to practice it everyday. They live next to
the beach and are able to do so daily. It is here that you will find the new girl from
Ipanema. They are goddesses, they are perfect, and they can fly.

Luciana Whitaker has never let boundaries get in her way. Graduated in Visual Communication in Rio, photographed for NY Newsday, worked as photo editor at Brazil's largest daily and lived with Iñupiaq Eskimos for 10 ys in Alaska, documenting sustainable whaling. Whitaker shoots for news and corporate clients in US, Europe and Brazil. Her photography is featured at the Smithsonian, Iñupiat Heritage Center and Alaska Contemporary Art Bank. In 2013 she took first prize in photojournalism for Latin America and in 2015 was part of Photo España. Whitaker was Photo Manager in the Rio 2016 Olympics.
