There is only one place in Kiev these days so surreal that it can
compete with Independence (Maidan) Square ā a frozen bend in the
river Dnieper in the eastern outskirts of the city.
With its modern skyscrapers under construction in the background that
counterbalance the obsolete soviet industrial architecture this is the
realm of the Ice Fishermen. These figures from the dawn of a
hypothetical nuclear winter slowly move like automatons on the
slippery surface in the continuous search for the ideal place to cut a
hole in the Ice and drop their lines.
