The Faceless Heroine

ATHENS, GREECE. Union leader Konstantina Kouneva, was attacked by two men with sulfuric acid. Her attackers threw acid all over her face and made her drink it. Kouneva was a cleaning lady for the subway system in Athens and was fighting for the rights of immigrant workers that are paid less money than Greek workers, even though they work longer hours. Kouneva herself is an immigrant from Bulgaria and came to Greece with her 12-year-old son and her mother. Kouneva's attackers will never be punished, because Greek justice decided to archive the case. Kouneva was awarded from the European Union's office in Athens on Women's Day.
