This Project evolved from living in a disabled body all my life, leading me to explore the relationship between my own awareness of being, and the way others may perceive me as a disabled woman.
The images are archivally printed and toned in gold.
Claire Gilliam was born in England in 1975. She gained her Bachelorâ??s Degree with Honors in Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, England, where she specialized in photographic and print based media. In 1998, she earned a Diploma in Photography from Kingston University, UK. In 1999 she attended Maine Media Workshops, and Rockport College, Maine, USA studying with photographers Arno Minkkinen, and Elizabeth Opalenik , and received a Professional Certificate in Photography. She has continued to attend workshops and classes, at both MMW and at The Center for Photography at Woodstock, studying with John Goodman, and Keith Carter. For the past three years, she has participated in the â??Independent Project Seminar â??at ICP in NY, developing new bodies of work under the guidance of Chuck Kelton, master printer, and owner of Kelton Labs in NYC.
Her work has been shown in the United Kingdom, Portugal and the USA, most recently at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, in Rockport, Maine in which one of her images was selected for an exhibition of self portrait work called â??Just Look At Yourselfâ??. Her latest portfolios are currently on exhibit at the ICP Education Gallery in a show curated by Chuck Kelton entitled â?? Clues To Identityâ??. In October, Claire was selected as the 2nd place winner of the 2009 Photographerâ??s Fellowship Award, through the Center for Photography At Woodstock in NY, and was awarded an Honorable Mention for her figurative work in the 2009 Annual Contest World Photography Gala Awards
