During the last week of August 2007, the country of Greece faced its worst forest fire disaster in terms of loss of life and damages to date. At least 64 people have died and over one-quarter of a million acres burned with fire damaging or destroying thousands of homes, property and livelihoods. In four days, numerous wildland fires burned uncontrolled across the country, as means to fight the flames became overwhelmed or hindered by continued high winds.
