This photo was taken in Ecuador's capital, Quito's, UNESCO heritage-listed centro histórico, on what was known as the calle de Siete Cruces (street of the Seven Crosses) and is now called calle García Moreno (after an assassinated President).

The little dog – Mariano, according to his tag – apparently belongs to this child and her family. He's looking through the railings of the Convento del Carmen Alto, the site of one of the street's seven crosses, as the girl reaches up to him. Her family, out of sight, are operating a street vending cart selling iced drinks.
