In the Renaissance, Leonardo Da Vinci argued that rivers and water play a major role in both building and destroying mountains. He made sketches of mountain forms, snow-covered peaks, atmospheric effects, and rock structures.. The depiction of mountains in Western art changed dramatically from the Renaissance to Romanticism and into modern art. The shift reflects changing ideas about nature, science, religion, and humanity's place in the world.
