The residents of Jalousie - a hillside slum in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince - learned to breathe thick air. Amidst the ongoing rampant gang warfare devastating the country, the shantytown has no access to running water, no sewage, no power systems. The sewage flows in open canals, and the waste is dumped in open sites. The air is stuffy, the dwellers inhale dust and fumes all day. But the estimated 80,000 residents having an undeniable thirst for simplicity and for life. One can find dignity, hope and a sense of community - they breathe life, they embrace all that is fragile in their lives.
