Remains of an ancient settlement. Rectangular stone houses are scattered throughout the Jericho Plain, a tributary of the Dead Sea in Israel. They belong to an abandoned village that was once built and inhabited by tribal Arabs, Sudanese black slaves who were brought by the Ottomans to work in agriculture in the extreme climatic conditions of the Dead Sea basin and the valley. The site, which covers a large area north of the Dead Sea, also contains the hermitages of monks carved into the rocks above an ancient stream whose waters fed palm trees that withered over the years.
