Photojournalism is the incessant effort to chronicle the inexorable moment, mostly to leave it behind and move onto the next. But not all moments can be equally forgone. This picture captures the tragic second when the Torre dei Conti, a medioeval tower by the Roman Forum, suffered its second collapse in a few hours during the rescue operations of a trapped worker, Octay Stroici, 66 years old. The collapse forced rescuers to retreat. Octay resisted 11 hours while firefighters kept trying to pull him out. They eventually did but he died at the hospital. A tragic end to a very brave rescue.
