I began exploring with Chemigrams whilst in recovery from an injury. The inspiration for this series titled ‘Creative Concussion’ stems from my personal experience with a concussion, prompting me to explore themes of change and impermanence. Each piece examines contrasts: light versus dark, order versus chaos, intention versus spontaneity. The final works resemble distorted faces, fragmented figures, and familiar forms not quite fully realised, almost dreamlike and surreal. These forms reflect my concussion symptoms, capturing a sense of disorientation and fluidity.
Murae Van Reede Van Oudtshoorn is a London-based South African artist working with camera-less photography. Her work explores themes of impermanence and transformation, how things fall apart, blur, or vanish. Rooted in personal experience of injury and loss, she works with materials like polaroids, chemigrams and photograms- embracing unpredictability through the use of chemicals, time and physical manipulation, to let images emerge rather than be constructed. Her practice reflects the fragile, shifting nature of memory and the emotional tension between holding on and letting go.
