The Drummer and the Halberdier

Portrait of a drummer and halberdier from the Pontifical Swiss Guard, photographed at the Swiss Guard's Vatican headquarters. The smallest army and one of the oldest military units in the world (dating back to 1506!) is responsible for the safety of the Pope and of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. Marc and Nicolas both joined the elite corps in the last four years and their Gala Uniforms reflect their different roles within the force, with different coloured cuffs and helmet plumes according to their rank.
