Spectacle of Sorrow is a visual fable using the circus as metaphor to explore the entanglement between performance, spectatorship, and power. Through eight staged images, Bochun Cheng examines how the roles of performer and observer blur—where identity, freedom, and truth are all under the gaze. Rather than a nostalgic reflection, this series is a quiet elegy for the collapse of spectacle and the unseen cost of being watched.
