The Potosi mines in Bolivia were a major source of wealth for the Spanish Empire. The mines are still active today with tin, zinc, lead and silver the main types of ore mined. The conditions are shocking and labourers suffer a range of illnesses including asthma, silicosis and pulmonary complications. The exploitation of the mines have led to massive pollution of the local environment.
