This photo shows the beautiful and rugged Lassen Peak and its parking lot. I want to juxtapose the natural and the man-made.

I don't photograph pristine landscapes; they don't exist. Climate change and air pollution have altered even the most remote locations.

While this is a landscape, it is shot vertically. I am interested in composition; I do not want to show the vastness of the scene. This photo is divided into four areas with different tones and textures. The unnatural parking spot lines lead into the image.

Jane Waterbury is a San Francisco-based photographer known for intriguing, bleak photography. She documents the similarity between human impact on the landscape and nature's own work. Her years growing up in the monochromatic vistas of the Mojave Desert instilled in her an ability to recognize incremental change.
