The Keelung Ghost Festival is a ritual that has been passed down for over 169 years. The house-shaped water lanterns symbolize the ancestral homes of different surnames.

People light the lanterns with flames on the shore before setting them adrift in the sea. This act symbolizes guiding the spirits of the deceased, hoping they will follow the lanterns to find their way home and enjoy a meal.
