Bird's eye view of the mortuary temple of Ramesses II, also known as Ramesseum, from a hot-air balloon. The aerial point of view allows to really appreciate the plan of the temple with all its different spaces: the pylons separating the courtyards, the hypostyle hall, the sanctuary at the end, and all the surrounding structures such as the palace (bottom left), the cultic areas or granaries and storage rooms (top and top right respectively). Aerial photography has proven to be a useful tool in archaeology that has been widely used, for instance, to detect structures hidden under the ground.
