In a small camel herders’ village, in the Thar desert near the Pakistani border, I discovered the harsh conditions in which these settled nomads have managed to adapt: no electricity, no running water, no school. The heat relentlessly strikes the red-sand bricks of unfinished houses.
Yet, this population, hidden by the Indian state, is exploited by tour guides from the city of Jaisalmer. Their lands are destroyed to create buggy tracks in the dunes, catering to mass tourism, where low-price competition is fierce.
How can one imagine a future for "l'enfant des sables" in such a sand prison ?
