Estrangement in adulthood is a painful reality for parents and children, often stemming from divorce, new relationships, or loss.
Reconciliation is rare, with only half of cases resolved. My mother, a deeply religious former dancer from South America, lives in rural Saarland, while I, non-religious, live in Hamburg.
Our estrangement began when my parents divorced at 15; I stayed with my alcoholic father, and she left with her new partner. After his death, our bond grew distant.
Now, as a parent myself, I question what the future holds and seek to reclaim what was lost.
