Handle with care

This image forms part of a larger project and builds on a long-standing theme in my photography practice: women's lives and the contradictions between the official speech -often idealized, versus reality.

The women I photograph are close to me. Their scars hurt. This is where the embroidery and stitching comes in. I borrow from my South American roots the long tradition of using embroidery as a a tool for advocacy and to make their scars visible, to raise awareness about their struggles. It is also a visual way for me to “protect” by creating a barrier between them and the world.

Her work reflects on the formation and loss of identity through everyday rituals that often go unnoticed. Her choice of subjects is heavily influenced by her experiences as a woman and a perennial migrant. The result is a series of intimate portraits and nostalgic landscapes that invite us to take pause.
